From The Middle Afghan

A new pattern featuring Caron Chunky Cakes. Introducing the From The Middle Afghan. The yarn is doing the work here with an easy to follow the pattern.

Once you get started, the rounds are very easy to maintain. One round is the setup round for the following set of 7 dc shells that are needed.

To complete this afghan, that is 58″ square. It uses 6 balls of the colour called Plum Pudding. Using an 8 mm or L Crochet Hook.

The pattern is Available At: From The Middle Afghan

You can use this concept for any other Caron Cakes or other yarn, just ensure the hook compliments the thickness of yarn and it will be good to go!

This, by far, has been my “go to” pattern for making quick baby blankets! I’m a relatively newbie to crochet, and I love this pattern because I don’t end up with wonky sides, looser beginning stitches and tighter stitches at the end of my blanket. It’s helped me work on the consistency of my gage (which I never really understood the concept until I found your website!)

I am currently working on this wonderful pattern. Should be a good size lap Afghan when I’m done. Love it! Thank you

I love this pattern but I don’t have enough money to buy the yarn your using, so is it ok to use a different yarn and thinner ply too??

    1. Marina King says:
      July 29, 2020 at 1:33 pm

you certainly can use whichever yarn you like, I’d recommend sticking close to the same weight in whatever yarn you would like to go with. otherwise, the blanket is likely to end up smaller after adjusting your hook size.

I’m trying to create a blanket with your pattern is it ok to use Double knit wool?
As I’m doing it my outside edge is curling so it looks like a lace edge is that ok? x

You certainly can, just a key thing to remember when changing yarn for any project, is to adjust your hook size accordingly. If you are a tight crocheter you may have to go up a hook size or two. Is that the look you are trying to get? sometimes rippling happens when there are too many stitches. If you are happy with it, try blocking and enjoy!

Is there a video to make a rectangle rather than a square?

    1. Mikey says:
      February 10, 2020 at 12:20 pm

      No there isn’t. I’m sorry.

How Do I continue baby blanket followers your video but to continue to make bigger. Can’t find written instructions

The pattern was linked but you probably missed it. I have just added a big blue button to show you where to click. 🙂 Thanks for calling this to my attention to review. 😉 Michael

Is there a way to adapt the pattern to a rectangle?

Please create and post a video for a rectangle of this patter ? please, please, please?!?!?! ❤️

Love the look of this pattern! Hoping you can provide more instruction on making this rectangular rather than square. This won’t neatly fit a child’s single/twin size bed.

How much of the regular caron cakes yarn would I need to make this blanket since its worsted weight not super bulky?

  11. Yvonne Merriam says:
    February 18, 2018 at 11:08 pm

    Maybe I’m

    1. Yvonne Merriam says:
      February 18, 2018 at 11:14 pm

Maybe I’m too new at this, but continuing this by the video directions has just given me an unworkably ruffled huge round “doilie” instead of the more rectangular afghan shown. Locking at the written instructions, it appears there are key steps not demonstrated in the video. Hate to think I have to pull out 2 balls of yarn and start from scratch using the written instructons now.

If you want to make a rectangle like in the picture, how do you switch to just making it longer when you’ve reached the width you want? Thanks!

I’ve finished with one skein so far, and I’m loving the pattern. I can’t seem to find it on Ravelry though? Is it not there or am I missing something? lol! Thank you for the video tutorial, I was lost until I watched it 🙂

I found the pattern but I’m confused with the first step after chaining 4 – it looks like something is missing

  17. chesterfieldzoo says:
    January 21, 2018 at 12:49 am

I switched it up by starting with 12 dc, sets of 5 for shells in Rd 2. Rd 3 looks like your Rd 5. Rd 4 I slip stitched in first gap, starting my row with the corner sc so I ended with the last shell thus eliminating the need to slip stitch across for Rd 5. My afghan is a rectangle.

If you watch the video it shows the beginning step.
In 4th chain from hook (the first one you made) make double crochet, chain 1, double crochet, chain 1 for a total of 7 times. Join with a slip stitc to the 3rd chain of beginning chain 4.

Can I get more detail on the alteration beginning? Following as-is gives me a rippled circle. Too many she’ll stiches of 5 dc each?

Can you use bernat blanket yarn with this pattern and what hook would be best to use?

    1. Vicky Thornber says:
      February 23, 2018 at 10:53 am

I use 9mm with bernat blanket. I’m thinking of doing the same for this in grey black and white.

You said plum pudding for the color yarn. I looked the color I found was called plum perfect. The plum pudding is in the Caron Big cakes. Just thought I’d let you know. 🙂

The Plum Pudding color is in the Caron Chunky Cakes also. I just ordered it yesterday from Michaels.
